Dust Devil

Dust Devil is a type of a light whirling wind; a natural phenomenon that in some cultures it is also associated with the spirits of the dead.

How could an image, myth, a natural phenomenon, physics transmits into a dance?

Alkis examines a weather phenomenon based on bodily explorations. Images and sounds, silence and movement arise from and with the dancers’ bodies. They are at the same time wind and leaves, storm showers and wood creaking, roaring waves, howling spirits and cloud machines. They breathe, blow, suck, roar, sing and dance the natural phenomena. With the voice score of Rafael Nassif,  movement and sound merge to one another, it creates a visual and acoustic landscapes.

Darkness fills the space. Very slowly, the contours of more and more things begin to appear. All of the elements on stage – the bodies of two dancers, sound, light and various objects – are considered to be equal protagonists. Each detail influences the progression of the choreography and opens up new realms of possibility. Again and again, the two performers craft new layers and thus enable various perspectives on the events at hand. They take on new standpoints, create fanciful transition-al landscapes, pile up and then rearrange what they find in front of them. With its repetitive nature, this work develops an enduring narrative, an everlasting moment in time – a performance without beginning or end.

 

We began walking THERE we have been is a performance for two performers and flashlights, which are operated by the two. The choreography is made of simple actions, focused on the interaction of light with body image/movement. As the performers simultaneously are operators and actors, so is the light. At times, its movement becomes the main player, so it’s perceived as an entity, a body. Other times, it illuminates another body or location.

we began walking THERE we have been is composed through a mirroring logic, meaning each action always reflect something of the previous one. The result is a detailed performance, in which each step, location and action are precisely measured and contributing to the overall visual, musical and sometimes magical experience.

Camouflage

Towering shapes staggering in the crepuscule, the stage’s back wall turns into a black hole, a piece of fabric seems suspiciously animate, yet it is hard to discern which bodies actually do house a heartbeat. “Camouflage” is an ingenious game of hide-and-seek in which the invisible appears and perception is put to the test. Cologne choreographer Özlem Alkis sketches a small world between a joke and an eerie atmosphere, a world in which silhouettes, movement and material constantly reform each other a new, and the four performer’s bodies themselves come under scrutiny. How do we perceive something, and what do we hold to be true? It becomes clear quite swiftly that seeing with one’s own eyes may not be the most reliable source for true facts. Rather, an underground information flow is blooming here.

ReVerbs_2013

The ReVerbs performance is based on rhythmical durations of the expansion and repetition of a gesture, which, through progressive resumption is intensified and grows sharply. In the absence of the music, the body creates its own supple and resonant reality. A reality that fits closely on each simultaneity of gestures, keeping the time of its evolution. A resonant thought is just a viewpoint on a relation that opens and closes itself successively, in order to re-engage its interior sense of time of getting closer or, on the opposite, farer away. A head bends in order to find its balance in the pair head. Then the head raises and fixes itself in its own body, as if it would not have had a support head next to it. The heads follow their individual track and become again what they used to be at the beginning: all-alone heads. The sounds are layering and find the space of alternation in their proximity to the wall, floor and concrete. The performance unites and separates the bodies that temporize, each in its own rhythm a common space of connection. The intimate space grows and gets out of the room. It enters public space, social spaces of intervention where the reality has a different tempo. The devices of the presence (sound, part of the body, public space) are resonating as if they were separate parts of a story with different rhythmical roots. When one does not hear the bodies anymore, the space between them is being heard.
