From a Western perspective sometimes falsely described as a dance, Semah is a spiritual duty practiced in Alevism as part of the Cem ceremony, the gathering of the community. In a culmination of movement, recited narratives called ‘deyiş’ and music performed on the traditional lute Saz the Semah-turners can rise to an emotional trance sometimes associated with the unification with the sacred animal of the crane.
